![]() How does Dickens introduce the theme of the supernatural in A Christmas Carol?ĭickens introduces the theme of the supernatural through Marley’s ghost appearing in the door knocker of Scrooge’s house. Students then used the introduction to complete their own analysis paragraphs answering the question. Then, I gave students a worked introduction and we colour coded and discussed how this would respond to the question. ![]() These were deliberately scaffolded to get students to select information relating to the supernatural that they could then use to focus on the question: How does Dickens introduce the theme of the supernatural in A Christmas Carol? As we completed feedback we discussed how these linked to Dickens’ intentions and context and how we could use these to respond to a question about the supernatural. Then, I gave the students the numbered questions to answer and we did feedback. The Portly Gentleman: Symbolising benevolence Scrooge’s behaviour in the counting house I asked students to select information relating to the following ideas: We explored the different supernatural and gothic elements in Stave 1 and looked carefully at the characterisation as we read and paused the reading. This process was repeated throughout the unit of work. Why: used ‘because’ or connectives to develop your reasoning Why: Effect (what the quotations makes you think or feel or makes the audience think or feel)ĩ. Why: Meaning (what the literal quotation means)Ħ. Why: used analytical verbs to drive analysisĥ. ![]() How: Evidence (quotations or moments from the text)Ĥ. How: Method (language or structure focus)ģ. However, Dickens may be using this introductory repetition to intrigue the reader as ghost stories and the use of gothic conventions was popular within the Victorian era and listening to a good story would have been a form of entertainment, something that Dickens could have been capitalising on through his allegory, in order to use entertainment to ensure that the wealthy could see the hypocrisy in their behaviour towards the poor during the Industrial Revolution, which was notoriously a terrible time for those with limited finances.Īs we discussed this we used the same criteria that I marked their answers against to label up the example.Ģ. The simile ‘Dead as a doornail.’ further reiterates the incontrovertible nature of him being dead. Dickens is using the juxtaposition of certainty and ambiguity to introduce the doubt in the reader’s’ mind about whether Marley really has died. However, the extract clause ‘:to begin with.’ highlights a level of uncertainty because it seems to foreshadow that he will not always be dead, in fact it suggests that he will come back to life, probably in the form of a ghost or supernatural entity. ‘Marley was dead: to begin with.’ ‘Dead as a doornail.’ĭuring the exposition of the novella ‘A Christmas Carol’ Dickens uses the repetition of the death of Marley to exemplify in no uncertain terms that ‘Marley was dead:’ indicating that he has passed on and is no longer alive, something that seems final and an unarguable fact.As well as this, it provided an opportunity to immediately embed some of the context learning.įeedback: How does Dickens present Marley in the exposition of the novella ‘A Christmas Carol’? ![]() I wanted to start off with the writing, marking and feedback to reintroduce/reinforce analytical skills, explore what Dickens was saying about Marley and introduce the supernatural theme. We used a resource fact sheet and broke it down into smaller chunks and then answered the questions on context as a retrieval practice starter.Īs we worked on Stave 1 reading, we started off with students writing about the exposition of Marley and then in the next lesson we looked at a model exploring as feedback. ![]() Then, we spent a lot of time doing question and answers and adding detail to their responses, alongside focusing on the effect created. I gave students about 15 minutes to answer these questions in detail and to ask me questions as they did this exercise. As well as looking at effect in more detail. As I was doing our faculty review, I set the Jim Carrey animated film as cover and then did lots of retrieval practice in the next lesson, then we looked at context as I wanted to hit the ground running with writing to include context/intentions as that was an area to work on that was evident from the mock exams. ![]() ![]() ![]() We understand that not everybody has the very same demands when it concerns e bicycle, so we provide a vast array of designs for you to pick from. In a segmented world of gravel bikes built for niche purposes (long races, short races, touring or singletrack), the Revolt is one of the few that remains open to it all and ready for almost any adventure. The battery is vital for giant farrago hybrid bike to function effectively, so among the functions of our tools is its electric storage space capacity in the batteries. If you want something bigger, you can squeeze a 700c x 45mm tire in there. The Revolt comes with 40mm Maxxis Velocita tires, which are best on hard dirt and packed gravel, and feel better on the road than knobbier options. It’s fast and stable when you sink low into the drops and hammer, yet cooperative when you’re cruising on rail trails and broken-up dirt roads. Giant delivers a ton of value across the six-bike Revolt line, which starts at $1,000 for a version with an aluminum frame and climbs up to this one, which comes with better parts than almost any bike at this price (hey there, carbon wheels and wireless shifting). Of all the fast gravel bikes we’ve tested, this may be the easiest to slide into. Here are our 14 favorites from the brand. Whether you’re a road racer, mountain bike lover, or Sunday spinner, Giant makes bike for you. We’ll keep our eye on inventory and update links as often as we can. If you see something on this list that catches your eye, and you hit the out-of-stock roadblock, patience (waiting until inventory is fulfilled again), perseverance (it may be available somewhere else online or even somewhere locally), or just being proactive (pre-order is available for many out-of-stock models) might be the way to go. But it’s also frustrating if your goal today is to place an online order for a shiny new bike only to find out that you may have to wait weeks or even months to get it. That’s a good thing, because it means more people have discovered bikes. This has led to a surge in bike sales and, thus, a depletion of stock. More people have caught on to the idea that outdoor escapes like hiking, running, and bike riding are safe, sanity-saving ways to get out and do something-away from others. ![]() Why It May Be Harder to Find a Bike Right NowĮver since terms like “shelter in place,” “stay at home,” and “social distancing” took root in our daily lexicon, we’ve had to find alternative forms of entertainment that don’t involve large crowds, indoor activities, or risky situations (such as travel). Liv bikes, both mountain and road, are consistent winners of Bicycling’s Editors’ Choice awards. In 2008 Giant formed Liv, a cycling brand dedicated on women riders and making bikes that are created with the female body in mind. “While many competitors either outsource their manufacturing or source raw materials before manufacturing, Giant owns the entire process from the creation of the actual raw build material, whether that be metal alloy or carbon composite material.” “What makes Giant different from our competitors is that from ideation, to raw material, to finished bicycle, Giant controls the entire process in-house,” Barnett said. Giant’s technology wins are worth noting, but they aren’t the only thing that separate it from other brands, Giant’s Global Marketing and Communications Manager, Doug Barnett, said. And in 1997, Giant debuted a road bike with “compact geometry.” The bike’s sloping top tube and smaller rear triangle are now used across the industry. First, in 1987, with the high-volume production of its CADEX carbon-framed bike, Giant was the first big bicycle company to mass-produce a carbon road bike. ![]() Since then, Giant has popularized at least two significant technological advances that have become the industry standard. ![]() Aluminum frame and fork, 8–speed drivetrain. ![]() ![]() ![]() According to some consumers, the collars are not particularly robust.
